Your Liposuction Experience
This procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and the exact technique will vary depending on the area being treated. Three basic steps that are involved in most liposuction procedures include:
- First, small incisions are made in the skin. Our surgeons use the SAFE liposuction technique. A cannula, or small tube, is then inserted into the incisions. The cannula is connected to a suction device, which is used to remove the fat. The surgeon will move the cannula back and forth to break up the fat cells and suction them out of the body.
- Second, the surgeon will make sure that all the fat has been removed by assessing the results with a small camera. Once the surgeon is satisfied with the results, he or she will close the incisions with stitches or staples.
- Third, you will be taken to a recovery room, where you will be monitored for any complications. Liposuction is typically an outpatient procedure, so you should be able to go home the same day as your surgery. You will need to take it easy for a few days and wear compression garments to help minimize swelling. Most people see noticeable results after about two weeks and final results after about six months.
