Treatable Conditions
BOTOX or Dysport may be used to refine the appearance of common facial conditions that occur with age, including:
- Wrinkles and lines on the sides of the eyes, also known as “crow’s feet”
- Forehead lines
- Glabellar lines, the so-called “frown lines” that form between the eyebrows
- Vertical wrinkles about the lip, also known as “lip lines”
- Lines and creases along the corners of the mouth
Your plastic surgeon will help you determine whether BOTOX or Dysport is best suited for your individual needs.
How Facial Injectables Work
BOTOX and Dysport are produced by different manufacturers, but each is a serum derived from botulinum toxin A. The serum is delivered to the affected site through a tiny needle and works by prohibiting the muscle contractions that over time cause creases, lines and wrinkles.
The procedure to administer BOTOX or Dysport is brief and requires no recovery time. The effects of both BOTOX and Dysport may last for months, although follow-up treatments will be necessary to maintain the results long-term.
Differences in Facial Injectables
Although BOTOX and Dysport are similar, there are some key differences. Dysport employs a lesser degree of the botulinum toxin protein per dose, which clinical tests indicate allows for a faster onset of results.
Dysport also affects a broader range, which can make it beneficial when treating a large area such as the forehead and brows as it requires fewer injections. BOTOX is well suited for tighter areas, such as around the eyes and mouth.
BOTOX and Dysport should not be confused with dermal fillers like Restylane, which use a form of hyaluronic acid to smooth away wrinkles and rejuvenate skin tone.
Results of Facial Injectables
The effects of Dysport tend to be noticeable within a couple days after treatment, while BOTOX may take a week for the full results to become evident. The visible results of both BOTOX and Dysport last an average of four to six months, depending on a number of individual factors.
The results of BOTOX and Dysport are not permanent. As their effects fade, muscle contraction will reoccur. Occasional repeat treatments are necessary to retain results.
